24-Hour Emergency Services
The Mental Health Center maintains professional clinical staff on duty 24-hours-a-day to provide mental health emergency services. These services are available at the Mission and Olathe offices during daytime hours. Evening, weekend and holiday emergency services are located at the Mission Office. The After Hours Service covers residents of both Johnson and Wyandotte counties, as well as providing telephone coverage to Leavenworth, Atchison, Douglas, and Jefferson counties. In 2004, 12,545 emergency situations, over  7,000  during night and weekend, or holiday hours, were handled by a combined daytime and After Hours staff of 13 full-time professionals.

Outpatient Services
A full range of individual, family, and group outpatient services are provided at the Mission and Olathe offices, serving both children and adults. Outpatient services focus on short-term intervention. Four thousand, seven hundred and sixty six persons received services from 24 full-time professional outpatient staff members. Three specialized programs function as part of outpatient services.

Aging Services
Two full-time professionals provide specialized aging services as part of the overall outpatient program.

Services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
A team of eight full-time staff provide specialized services for nearly 110 hearing impaired residents of Johnson County. The program coordinator also oversees a grant funded project to improve mental health services for the hearing impaired statewide.

Forensic Services Unit

The Forensic Services Unit is divided into the Sexual Abuse Team and the Corrections Team. The Sexual Abuse Team serves offenders, as well as victims and their families who are involved with child sexual abuse. A full time staff of six professionals provided services to 312 persons in 2004. The Corrections Team provides psychological testing, crisis intervention, group therapy, and staff training to the courts, District Attorney’s office, correction agencies and the county jail. A staff of seven full-time professionals provided 7,890 hours of service.

Services to Adults with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness
The Community Support Services (CSS) Division provides a comprehensive range of services for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. The program is organized around a community support systems/case management model. CSS served 855 long term mentally ill clients, with a staff of 126.

Family Focus (Children’s Services)
Family Focus (a separate children’s service unit) serves children with severe emotional behavioral problems and their families. A full-time staff of 63 work with those children most at risk of hospitalization or out-of-home placement. There is a strong emphasis on community-based services and collaborative approaches with other community agencies and schools. In 2004, the unit served more than 544 children and their families.

Community Information and Education
A staff of two professionals provide a variety of non-clinical community education and prevention services. These include classes on numerous mental health related subjects, talks to community groups, and specialized, non-clinical intervention programs. A major program of this unit includes working with divorcing families as part of a cooperative effort with the District Court system in Johnson County. Over 3,100 professional service hours were devoted to community information and education in 2004.

Regional Prevention Center (RPC)
The RPC is a prevention resource for communities, families and individuals interested in creating and supporting environments fir children to become healthy and contributing members of Kansas communities. Using the Communities that Care Prevention Model, the staff of five works with local leaders, coalitions, school districts, and parents to reduce and prevent underage use of alcohol and tobacco and prevent the abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. In 2004, the RPC provided over 6,900 hours of service.

Substance Abuse Services
The Mental Health Center operates three distinct substance abuse programs.

Adolescent Center for Treatment (ACT)
ACT is a 20-bed residential facility for adolescents dealing with substance abuse issues. The focus of this program is short-term residential treatment, followed by extensive aftercare services. Twenty-eight professional and residential care staff are employed by this program. Two hundred and fifty adolescents were admitted to ACT in 2004.

Intensive Outpatient Adolescent Services
This program offers group counseling and education services in the late afternoon and early evening hours for teens dealing with substance abuse issues. Two hundred and forty-eight adolescents and their families were served in this  program.

Adult Detoxification Unit (ADU)
ADU operates a 12-bed unit, 24-hours-a-day, to assist individuals safely through the process of detoxification from chemical substances in a non-medical setting. The program has a professional and care staff of ten, and served 754 people.

Medical Services
A staff of eight psychiatrists and eleven nurses are available to provide services to those persons requiring medication or other medical support.

Administration/Operations
The essential support services for Johnson County Mental Health Center function within the Operations Division. The following administrative components are a part of this division: (1) Financial Services, including accounting and client accounts payable, (2) Data Processing and Program Evaluation, (3) Mission office support staff, (4) Olathe office support staff, (5) CSS office support staff (6) Maintenance staff.
