Philosophy
We believe that chemical dependence is a primary disease
that is progressive, chronic, and often fatal if left untreated. The
progressive nature of chemical dependence requires appropriate
intervention to limit suffering and enhance the likelihood of successful
recovery.
We believe that every individual deserves the
opportunity to turn his or her life around and to be treated with
dignity and respect. Our services are designed to assist individuals
safely through the difficulties and dangers of detoxification from
chemical substances in a non-medical setting. Every effort is made to
connect clients to ongoing treatment and/or community-based self-help
groups.
Eligibility
Services are available to Kansas residents, 18 years of
age or over, who are in need of a safe, supportive environment in which
to manage their withdrawal from alcohol and/or other drugs.
Admission priority is given to:
• Pregnant women
• HIV-positive individuals
• Injection drug users
Johnson County Mental Health Center does not
discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex,
religion, age, or
disability in the provision of services.
Admission Criteria
Referrals to the detox unit are typically screened by
telephone prior to admission to ensure appropriate placement, but
drop-in clients may be admitted if appropriate.
• Clients must have used alcohol and/or other drugs
within 72 hours prior to admission and must be experiencing
physiological symptoms of withdrawal from chemical substances or be in
imminent danger of withdrawal.
• Clients must be medically stable and ambulatory.
• Clients must be free from suicidal, homicidal, or
psychotic behaviors.
• Clients on medications are accepted.
Prescription medications must be in original
pharmacy-labeled containers.
Adult Detoxification Unit
Services
The Adult Detoxification Unit (ADU) operates 24 hours a
day and accepts admissions around the clock.
ADU is a non-medical detox program. Withdrawal symptoms
are monitored and evaluated by ADU staff throughout detoxification, and
clients are referred for medical care when necessary.
The average stay at detox is brief. Clients are
typically stabilized within a few days. After stabilization, clients are
referred to other service providers for ongoing treatment or are
connected with community-based recovery support groups such as AA or NA.
Referrals to mental health services are made for clients
with psychiatric and other mental health problems.
Accommodations
Each client is assigned to a semi-private room with a
bathroom. Bedding and towels are provided. Meals are served at the
facility. Fees and Funding
Clients are not charged a fee for detoxification services. The program
is funded by local alcohol taxes and funds from the Kansas Division of
Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.
