JCPRD's Maasen is NRPA Midwest Regional Council Chair-Elect

Johnson County Park and Recreation District Planning and Development Manager Bill Maasen was recently elected to a four-year term on the Midwest Regional Council of the National Recreation and Park Association.

"It was a chance to give back to the professional association and the Midwest region," said, Maasen, who volunteered as a candidate for the post. "I've been a member of the Midwest Regional Council for about seven years and it was an opportunity to take a larger role in the organization."

His four-year term will begin during the NRPA's Annual Congress & Exposition in Indianapolis on Sept. 25-29 and will include one year as chair-elect, two years as chair beginning during the 2008 National Congress in Baltimore, and one year as past chair.

The Midwest Regional Council includes six states: Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. Maasen said the council typically meets three times a year: during the national congress, at mid-year in Washington D.C., and in April or May during its own conference.

The council serves as a conduit for getting information out and coordinating NRPA activities in the member states. The number of representatives each state has on the council is based on the total number of NRPA member agencies the state has.

Maasen, who has been with the District since November 1986, holds a bachelor's degree in forest management from the University of Missouri - Columbia, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Kansas. His duties include land acquisition and oversight of the District's planning and development department. In late 2005, Maasen was elected to a three-year term on the Board of the National Society for Park Resources (NSPR), which is a branch of the NRPA representing members working in natural resources, parks, and conservation. He previously served as president of the Kansas Recreation and Park Association from 2003 through 2005.

During his time with the District, Maasen has personally acquired about 6,000 acres in new park land.

This program will meet at 9 a.m. Monday and Wednesday beginning Oct. 15. Class cost for 15 50-minute sessions is $53 per person for Johnson County residents or $58 for nonresidents.

While the JCPRD's 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the District's Registration Department at (913) 831-3359, and if space is available without forfeiting the place of a person over 50, their registration can be taken.

The JCPRD's ACTIVITIES catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pick-up at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, visit the District's website at www.jcprd.com.
