My Resource Connection

The purpose of My Resource Connection is to connect individuals needing assistance with resources that can help meet their needs. The assistance that individuals may need are many and varied: Groceries, clothing, housing, health care, counseling, transportation, employment, emotional support, … Thankfully, there are many organizations in the greater Kansas City area that are able to address these needs. The role of My Resource Connection is assist individuals find and locate relevant resources at these organizations.

My Resource Connection is maintained and hosted by the government of Johnson County, KS. Significant contributions of data come from United Way 211 of Greater Kansas City, various departments within Johnson County government, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS.

We provide a variety of online information and publications to assist individuals and families with access to public benefits, community resources, and helpful services and activities.

Aging & Accessibility Directory - A compact, comprehensive, one-stop resource, online for services and information for individuals with a disability and seniors in Johnson County.

Caregiver Newsletters - The Area Agency on Aging offers a free monthly newsletter "The Caregiver Assistance News" with topics of interest to caregivers.

Explore Your Options - A Kansas Guide to Information and In-Home Services is published annually by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) for all eleven Area Agencies on Aging in Kansas.

Special Resource Directories - published annually by the Best Times offer information about in-home and hospice care providers, independent retirement facilities, assisted living and memory care facilities, and nursing and rehabilitation facilities.

The Special Resource Directories are each published and mailed annually as supplements to The Best Times newspaper. They are designed to be a useful resource for individuals and families.

The Best Times

The Best Times   is a bi-monthly newsmagazine provided for all Johnson County residents aged 60 and over, publishing articles that inform, challenge, support, entertain, and persuade. In September 1982, The Best Times began as a pilot program funded through a grant from the Older Americans Act and the state of Kansas.   Later it became a regular publication of Johnson County Human Services.  It is currently published bi-monthly by the County Manager's Office and available online.

The Best Times is mailed directly to 57,000 Johnson County households with a family member 60 or older. The mailing list is updated monthly from the Johnson County voter registration rolls, or residents may request that their names be added. For families outside of Johnson County and others, there is a $15 annual subscription fee.

It is also available for pickup from libraries, senior centers, and multi-service centers. Readership is estimated at 75,000.

Many articles are written by freelance professionals and readers. Other articles are provided by the Area Agency on Aging.  If you would like to submit something for publication, please contact the managing editor via e-mail (preferred) or phone. Describe the nature of your submission (essay, profile of a resident, profile of an organization/service, poem, etc.) and how you think it fits into the mission of The Best Times in serving Johnson County senior adults.  The editor will let you know whether the proposed piece is a good fit and ensure that it hasn’t already been covered in The Best Times. If the piece is accepted, you will be given a word count. You’ll be asked to e-mail the piece, preferably as a Word attachment, to Gerald.Hay@jocogov.org.

Many articles are more dynamic with a photograph. Digital photos by e-mail are preferred, but photos on film can be scanned and returned.

The Best Times has a limited budget for purchasing freelance work. Most profiles or essays receive $80 and most poems $45. A higher rate is occasionally paid for an article that requires multiple sources and extensive interviews. You will be asked to submit a W-9 form (which will be mailed to you) in order that we may generate an invoice for your work. You will not receive a 1099.

SUBSCRIPTIONS  
We update the mailing list monthly from the voter registration rolls.  If you are 60 or older and a resident of Johnson County, all you need to do is let us know your name and address. Non-residents and those under age 60 may subscribe to The Best Times for $15 per year.   Send your check, made out to The Best Times, to 111 S. Cherry St, Suite 3300, Olathe, KS 66061.  If you get duplicate issues at your address give us a call and we will manually delete one name.   If you move within Johnson County, send us a change-of-address notice.  If you move outside of Johnson County and want to receive the paper, include your check for $15 with the notice.

If you prefer to get your information online,  try the “Online Opt-In” program.  Just call or e-mail us and let us know that you would like to read the paper online each month.   Provide your e-mail address and each month we’ll send you an e-mail notice that the paper is available online, complete with a link directly to the issue. We’ll also remove you from the mailing list for the printed newspaper. The Best Times - Quick access to all the senior news, and no paper to recycle!

CALENDAR 
The Best Times includes an extensive calendar section featuring classes, support groups, workshops, and more of interest to mature adults.  Items for the calendar should be submitted to The Best Times, 111 S. Cherry, Suite 3300, Olathe, KS 66061.   Telephone messages are useful only in an emergency or to make last-minute changes.  We reserve the right to edit or abbreviate submitted items.   Calendar items should arrive in our office no later than the eighth of the month prior to publication.  For example, items for the August calendar need to be here no later than July 8.   We run calendar items on a space-available basis. Occasionally it is not possible to include all items submitted.
