Severe Weather Awareness Week

Johnson County will be participating in the 2015 Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) along with the State of Kansas Division of Emergency Management and National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill. SWAW runs from March 2-6 and includes a state wide Tornado Drill Tuesday, March 3rd at 1:30pm. The State wide tornado drill will be performed in addition to routine monthly test of the outdoor warning sirens on March 4th at 11:00am, so excluding any weather complications and technical issues, the sirens will be tested two days in a row in March, the 3rd and 4th. In addition to the annual state-wide tornado drill on the 3rd, Johnson County will also be testing its mass notification system, NotifyJoCo at 10:00am on the 3rd as well. SWAW Events:

March 2nd :

  • Start of Severe Weather Awareness Week
  • Staff weather radio set-up (9:00 - 4:00)

March 3rd:

  • 10:00am - Countywide NotifyJoCo Test
  • 1:30pm - State-wide tornado drill (activation of outdoor warning sirens and NOAA weather radios)
  • Staff weather radio set-up (9:00 - 4:00)

March 4th:

  • 11:00am - Montly county-wide outdoor warning system test
  • Staff weather radio set-up (9:00 - 4:00)

March 5th:

  • Back-up date for statewide tornado drill, 1:30pm (if postponed from Tuesday)
  • Staff weather radio set-up (9:00 - 4:00)

March 6th:

  • Emergency Operations Center Open House (9:00 AM - 7:00 PM)

Johnson County Severe Weather Awareness Week Proclamation

On February 19th, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed the week of March 2nd through the 6th as Severe Weather Awareness Week.
