The Airport Commission operates two air transportation facilities serving the aviation needs of the region, which contributes to Johnson County’s economic vitality and quality of life.

Celebrating Aviation Day at New Century AirCenter and Executive Airport

Bring the family to celebrate Aviation Day at Johnson County Airport Commission's New Century AirCenter and Executive Airport from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

New Century AirCenter:

  • Advanced Aviation and Commemorative Air Force to sponsor an Open House at Advanced Aviation and CAF Hangar.  CAF will be offering rides in their WWII PT19 (fee); weather permitting.  Lunch will be provided for a fee in the CAF Hangar.
  • New Century Air Service to sponsor an Open House, tours, display of aircraft, and airplane rides (fee).

Executive Airport:

  • Air Associates to sponsor an Open House and display of aircraft, airplane rides (fee) beginning early afternoon, Redbird full motion simulator demonstration and refreshments.
  • KCAC will sponsor an Open House that includes air traffic control tower tours, aircraft displays featuring new, military, antique, civil air patrol as well as business aircraft, demonstration flights (fee), hot air balloons, Angel Flight and many other aviation related organizations. A free lunch will be served.
  • KC-Copters to sponsor an Open House, helicopter display, and lunch will be provided.
Airport Commission Selects New Deputy Director

Melissa W. Cooper, A.A.E., has been Deputy Director for the Johnson County Airport Commission since February 17, 2014 and is responsible for all aviation activities at both Johnson County airports as well as administrative and financial functions.  She holds a master’s degree in aviation safety and a bachelor's degree in aviation technology, both from the University of Central Missouri.  In addition, Melissa is accredited with the American Association of Airport Executives and holds a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating.  Prior to coming to the Johnson County Airport Commission, she was the Assistant Airport Manager at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport in Kansas City, Missouri since 2006 and managed their Airport Operations.  During her tenure, the airport Received perfect FAR Part 139 Inspections for six of the seven years. Previously, she worked as a contractor with the FAA Central Region Runway Safety Program, as a System Controller for Vanguard Airlines, and a scheduler for Executive Beechcraft.

Airport Commission Employees Celebrate 5-Year Anniversaries

Congratulations to Airport Commission employees Ken Gimblet and Casey Buta for five (5) years of service.

Ken began his career with the Airport Commission on October 2008 as Maintenance Technician I.  By December 2008, Ken was promoted to Maintenance Technician II and given sole responsibility of maintaining the Executive Airport and serving the tenants located at the airport.  In addition, as part of his new duties and responsibilities, Ken achieved Wastewater Operator Certification from the State of Kansas in August 2009.

Casey Buta began his career with the Johnson County Airport Commission on February 2009 as Maintenance Technician I.  He started in the rail department with a Conductors Certificate, but after two years working as the primary Switchman, Casey received his Locomotive Engineers License from the National Academy of Railroad Sciences in June 2011.



Airport Commission Selects New Executive Director

Colin McKee, A.A.E., IACE has been Executive Director for the Johnson County Airport Commission since December 1, 2013, and is the chief executive for the airports organization, reporting to the Airport Commission. Previously, he was the Deputy Director with responsibilities for all aviation activities at both Johnson County airports as well as administrative and financial functions.  He holds a master’s degree in Aviation Safety from the University of Central Missouri, with an undergraduate degree in Aviation Technology and is accredited with the American Association of Airport Executives. Prior to coming to the Johnson County Airport Commission, he was the Airport Director of the Midwest National Air Center and Assistant Airport Manager for the Lee's Summit Municipal Airport. In addition, Colin is a native of the Johnson County area and has been an active pilot since 1989.
