The Johnson County Library is pleased to announce the winners of the delivery truck design contest. Most people have seen the Johnson County Library delivery trucks that are specially decorated with literary-themes on the sides and back of the vehicles: Captain Ahab’s Fine Seafood, Benjamin Button’s Diaper Service, Kafka’s Pest Control, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’s Pharmacy with the tag line “Available at Johnson County Library”. The messages on the trucks are part of a campaign to promote the library, the many stories that can be found there and to encourage reading, even the classics.

Now there are four new designs developed by two local artists. The winners are: Sally Carmichael, Lenexa, (3 winning ideas) and Cambria DeLee, graphic designer, who recently moved from Johnson County to Nashville, TN.

The new 2012 winning trucks designs feature the following designs based on classic literature:• Carroll’s Mat Hat Emporium (DeLee)• Peter Pan’s Flight School (Carmichael)• Rapunzel’s Custom Wigs (Carmichael)• Sherlock’s Pipe & Tobacco (Carmichael)All, of course, Available at the Johnson County Library

The original campaign theme and design was developed for the Johnson County Library pro bono by Barkley Advertising Agency, Kansas City, MO in 2009. According to Library Communications Manager Kasey Riley, the award-winning vehicle campaign has generated interest locally as well as nationally.

“For the past year or so, people have asked when we were going to change the designs on the trucks,” Riley noted. “They enjoy the visuals that are associated with reading and the characters from classical literature. We wanted to open the contest to area artists and were thrilled with so many wonderful design entries. It was a tough decision but the winning designs have been selected, and they are now installed on the trucks.”

Sally Carmichael is a 20-year old graphic design student at the University of Kansas. She claims Lenexa and Lawrence as her hometowns. When asked who her favorite authors were, Sally had trouble narrowing it down. Her list includes Tolkein, Capote and Salinger. Her favorite thing about Johnson County Library is the involvement. When asked, she replied, “(Johnson County Library) is always doing new and exciting things with the community.”

Cambria DeLee is a 30-year old graphic designer. Having just relocated to Nashville, TN for a job, Cambria did a fantastic job creating her design while getting used to a new job in a new city. She expressed her gratefulness to a friend for passing this contest along to her. Her favorite thing about Johnson County Library is the many convenient locations. “You never have to drive far to get to a library.” she said.
