Coroner Facility

Frontier Forensics Midwest LLC building

Currently, Johnson County autopsies are conducted at Frontier Forensics Midwest LLC in Kansas City, Kansas (pictured above). However, there are many reasons it would be beneficial for Johnson County to have its own dedicated facility as described below.

Coroner facility benefits:

  • Increase the number of autopsies we are able to conduct (currently conduct 305 on average, whereas the national average for our county’s population is 445)
  • Ability to control prioritization of autopsy work for the county
  • On-site toxicology (currently outsourced), resulting in faster turnaround of results
  • Getting out in front of anticipated accreditation legislation and resulting requirements for facilities
  • Real-time data reporting for epidemics and crime, resulting in opportunities for quicker county response to both potential public health issues or quick emerging crime trends
  • Opportunity to provide service to municipalities in the region, thus helping to offset the facility’s operational costs

Coroner facility recommendations:

  • Build 29,000 square foot facility at a cost of approximately $19 million
  • Operational model specifications:
    • Initially outsource pathologists and toxicology
    • Migrate to county-staffed
    • Pursue fee-for-service opportunities with regional Kansas counties
  • Meet national standards and accreditation
  • Pursue educational partnership
