Our county’s department of Health and Environment won a 2017 Food Recovery Challenge Regional Award by the U.S., Environmental Protection Agency for its local food composting programs, including a partnership program with Shawnee Mission schools. The EPA announced its winners that highlight the accomplishments of organizations and agencies in preventing and diverting food waste. Both Johnson County Department of Health and Environment and the Shawnee Mission School District were recognized for their accomplishments as part of the EPA’s region 7 which includes Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
Johnson County staff provided hands-on support in local schools as part of composting programs, educating students about the importance of waste diversion. They also provided tools for the programs to be successful – specially marked bins and signage to show what can and cannot be composted or recycled.
