A group of local residents shared a lovely afternoon at the Jewish Community Center yesterday participating in a speed dating event for people age 60 and older. The event was hosted in partnership with Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Program, Jewish Family Services, The Heritage Center of the Jewish Community Center, Shepherd Center Central of Kansas City, Brookdale Senior Living Solutions and RSVP/Brown and Gold Club.
The 24 older adults who participated did so for a variety of reasons — some were looking for friendship or companionship, others sought romance, and some simply wanted to sharpen their social skills. The “speed dating” format allowed participants to visit with one another for six minutes before moving along to the next person. Because each conversation was only six minutes long, if someone didn’t click with the person they were chatting with, they only had a few short minutes before moving along to the next conversation.
Connections beyond yesterday’s event will only be made if both participants marked that they were interested in one other on their scorecards; it's their choice as to whether or not they connect in the future to continue their conversation. Based on the positive feedback from participants and partner agencies after yesterday's event, plans are already in the works for another speed dating event in the coming months (most likely during late winter or early spring of 2016).
