Looking for something to do this July 4 weekend? There are several public fireworks shows that will light up the Johnson County night skies in local 2015 Independence Day celebrations on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Activities at various events will include parades, live music, food booths, inflatables, face painting, games, petting zoos, and fun for all ages.

 The holiday celebration will begin a day earlier in Edgerton, which is sponsoring a Community Picnic at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks display at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Friday, July 3, at the Martin Creek Park.

Fairway, in partnership with Westwood and Roeland Park along with funding assistance from Westwood Hills and Mission Woods, is having a fireworks display, beginning at approximately 9:30 p.m. July 3, at Bishop Miege High School, 5041 Reinhardt Drive, Roeland Park.

A Flags 4 Freedom display, featuring approximately 1,300 American flags, will be visible until approximately 4 p.m. Monday, July 6. A Patriotic Concert will occur at 1:55 p.m. July 4 at the Merriam Marketplace, 5740 Merriam Drive.

Community events scheduled on July 4 include:

  • Overland Park: Annual Spangled Spectacular Festival at Corporate Woods, 9400 Indian Park Parkway, starting at 4 p.m. with fireworks beginning at approximately 9:40 p.m.
  • Gardner: Activities begin at 4 p.m. at Celebration Park, 32701 West 159th Street, with fireworks occurring at sundown.
  • Stilwell: Fourth of July Parade registration/lineup starts at 5 p.m. along 192nd Street with event beginning at 6 p.m. and ending in downtown Stilwell. Fireworks will follow at about 9:30 p.m.
  • Prairie Village: Annual VillageFest celebration is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Municipal Campus, 7700 Mission Road.
  • Olathe: Fireworks start at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the Great Mall of the Great Plains, 20700 West 151st Street.
  • Leawood: Event starts at 5 p.m. with fireworks at approximately 9:45 p.m. at Leawood City Park, 10601 Lee Boulevard.
  • Lenexa: Community Days Parade, with a theme of “The Brightest Star,” starts at 10 a.m. in downtown Lenexa. The 37th Annual Freedom Run occurs at 7 a.m.
  • De Soto: Holiday celebration gets under way at 7 p.m. with fireworks at approximately 10 p.m. at Riverfest Park.
