Johnson County’s main website (www.jocogov.org) has received a “Sunny Award” for transparency from the Sunshine Review, a non-profit organization dedicated to state and local government openness.
The website was one of only three county websites in the state of Kansas to win a 2011 award, receiving an A- rating from Sunshine Review. Sedgwick and Wyandotte counties also were recipients.
Staff reductions due to Johnson County government’s voluntary retirement incentive program prompted the Johnson County Library Board to review the hours of operation for the 12 Johnson County neighborhood libraries and the Central Resource Library at its regular board meeting held on December 21.
In January 2012, Johnson County Transit (JCT) will start running The JO Xpress, an enhanced bus service along I-35 linking Johnson County with downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Bus service currently runs along I-35, but this enhanced bus service will feature Bus on Shoulder (BOS) operations during the morning and evening rush hours from 95th Street to the Johnson/Wyandotte County Line.

County Librarian Donna Lauffer will retire from Johnson County Library on December 24, 2011 ending 32 years of service to Johnson County Library. During her tenure as County Librarian, Johnson County Library has successfully streamlined materials handling processes saving the Library approximately $160,000 annually, implemented Radio Frequency Identification technology to improve inventory taking processes and reduce theft, and the library was named the 2010 Federal Depository Library of the Year.
