The Johnson County Meals on Wheels program seeks Gardner-area residents who drive and who have a little time each week to help their neighbors in need.
Johnson County Meals on Wheels is a service of the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging, providing nutritious meals delivered by volunteers to county residents who are 60 or older; homebound; unable to drive, shop for groceries, or cook their own meals; or have no one to assist with meal preparation.
The Johnson County Library Foundation has named four outstanding individuals as winners of the annual 2011 Pinnacle Awards: Carlos Antequera, Mark Gilman, Kathy McLellan, and Gregory T. Wolf.
Road improvements totaling $15.7 million for 2012 involving 20 new projects in nine cities, were unanimously approved Thursday, September 29, by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.
The funding included $12,739,462 for the County Assistance Road System (CARS) program that was approved in August by the Board as part of the county’s FY 2012 Budget plus the use of $2,983,538 from 2010 and 2011 CARS projects for a total authorization of $15,723,000.
The 2012 Stormwater Management Program approved Thursday, September 29, by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners totals more than $18.1 million, including funding for capital projects in six cities.
The Board approved the plan unanimously.

Johnson County Library will present a program with Daniel Woodrell, author of eight novels at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 8, at the Central Resource Library, 9875 W. 87th Street, Overland Park, KS. 66212. His appearance is part of the library’s “Legacies of the Civil War” series of programs.
What: Winners of the Johnson County K-State Research and Extension Sunflower Growing Contest in celebration of the Kansas sesquicentennial will be selected at the Overland Park Fall Festival.

Johnson County’s Utility Assistance Program received an additional $25,000 on Thursday, September 22, to help income-eligible residents in paying their utility bills through the end of this year.
The additional funding was unanimously approved by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.
Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) received six Peak Performance awards presented by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA). The Peak Performance Awards program recognizes public wastewater treatment facilities for their outstanding compliance records in the 2010 calendar year.

JOHNSON COUNTY, KANSAS (September 15, 2011) — Funding from the Johnson County Heritage Trust Fund was authorized Thursday, September 15, by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners for ten historical projects in three cities.
Recommendations for $179,273 in 2011 funding were presented to the Board by the Trust Fund’s Grant Review Board, which reviewed requests involving a dozen applications seeking $303,740. Five of the funded projects are in Olathe, four in Shawnee, and one in Gardner.

The Johnson County Charter Commission has scheduled its next public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Sylvester Powell Community Center, 6200 Martway, Mission.

In celebration of the upcoming 2011 National Child Passenger Safety Week, Johnson County Safe Kids and Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics are offering “SAFE KIDS, SAFE TRAVEL FOR CHIILD CARE”. A workshop designed specifically for child care providers and educators on the safe use of child safety seats.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages 3 to 14. Correctly used child safety seats are extremely effective and reduce the risk of death as much as 71%. Nearly 73% of child restraints are not installed or used correctly.
